The Hidden Cost of High Deductible Health Plans

Not surprisingly, more businesses are embracing consumer-driven plans. Over the past eight years, the size of the average employer-sponsored plan deductible has more than doubled. In the next three years, almost 40% of companies that offer health insurance may make high deductible plans the only choice for workers. A quarter of all employers are doing that now. In 2013, just 13% offered only HDHPs to their employees.

Although HDHPs reduce utilization, workers forgo necessary as well as unnecessary care, according to several studies. Delayed care can resurface later as more costly health complications, emergency room visits, hospitalizations, readmissions, disability and absenteeism.

Please join Melissa Tobler, RN, National Director of Health Strategies accompanied by Tracy Reese, Benefits Consultant for Hays Companies as they outline the potential setbacks inherent in HDHPs and offers her thoughts for reining in potential costs and maintaining/improving workforce health.

Speaker Bio:

Melissa’s position at Hays Companies draws on her career as a registered nurse, during which time she has actively been involved in developing and overseeing case management, utilization review, quality assurance/improvement, and disease management strategies for insurance plans, vendors, and employers. Melissa is a patient advocate who has created win-win solutions for groups and employees, balancing the needs of the individual with the fiscal responsibilities of the group.

In her role at Hays Companies, Melissa partners with employers to understand the impact of health on their productivity, absenteeism, health plan costs, and ultimately profitability. She works with clients in strategically designing and implementing health-related programs to support individual health and well-being as well as organizational growth and development.

Melissa’s key areas of expertise include:

 Strategic planning within the total benefits design and organizational development model, targeting such initiatives as large case management, disability, wellness, disease management, EAP, predictive modeling, health risk assessments, financial health, employer engagement and behavioral health.

 Utilization and outcome data analysis and interpretation to assist clients in identifying and understanding clinical needs within their population.

 Evaluation of vendor activities, strategies, and outcomes

 Assistance in program implementation and integration, with a special focus on outreach and communications to members.

Prior to joining Hays Companies, Melissa was a Vice President with Wachovia Insurance Services and the National Practice Leader for Clinical Strategies. Melissa was also the Director of Disease Management Product Development for APS Healthcare, Inc. In that capacity, she built disease management programs for asthma, prenatal, diabetes, heart failure, at-risk cardiac, low back pain, and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. Her programs were used for NCQA accreditation for the health plans she serviced.

Melissa, a member of the Nursing Honor Society, received her Bachelor’s in Nursing from Marquette University and has completed her course work for her Master’s in Business Administration. In 2007, she became the first benefits consultant to be certified in Clinical Outcomes Report Analysis by the Disease Management Purchasing Consortium (DMPC). In 2009, she was one of the first five recipients of DMPC ‘s new Certification in Care Management Contract Design and Negotiation. She has also received the designations of Health Insurance Associate and Managed Healthcare Professional from HIAA. In 2014, she received advanced certification from Care Innovations Validation Institute and in 2015 certification in Thriving Workplace Culture.
